The much publicised Unique Identification number may not be as infallible as it is touted to be. Though Aadhaar -- the implementation programme of the UID -- records both the biometric and iris scan data of the individual, it is solely dependent on biometrics for application. The government aims to have biometric authentication readers at ration shops to ensure that only eligible candidates get access to food subsidy and other benefits.

Activist Medha Patkar, along with 200 other protestors, was detained by the Mumbai police at Santacruz in suburban Mumbai, after she blocked the Western Express Highway on Thursday morning. Traffic movement near the highway was affected by the blockade for over two hours. Patkar and local residents were protesting the demolition of several homes for a slum rehabilitation authority project in Golibar in Santacruz.

Two accused arresed in different cases of chain snatching were rushed to JJ Hospital in Mumbai after they allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in police custody. The accused have been identified as 19-year-old Shadab Sheikh and 21-year old Shehzad Khan. They were in the custody of the LT Marg police.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya on Saturday released documents obtained under the Right To Information Act which contradict the claims of politicians that the land on which Adarsh cooperative housing society was built was never intended for defence personnel. Congress Member of Legislative Council Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and former chief minister Ashok Chavan had previously refuted the allegations of any irregularity in the development of the plot.

The Mumbai police issued a terror advisory on Thursday night, after receiving intelligence inputs about four terrorists sneaking into the city ahead of the festive season.Four members of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashker-e-Tayiba sneaked into Mumbai, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said on Thursday. The city police also released the sketch of one of the four suspected terrorists.The police have intensified security at crowded places and religious sites.
